What is mental toughness, really?

Parents, coaches, and athletes often misunderstand mental toughness. We use the lack of mental toughness as a catchall excuse for losses, failures, and old-fashioned butt-whoopings. The idea is that failure is the wall where an athlete’s or team’s mental toughness ends.


That’s wrong!


Mental toughness isn’t the ability to white-knuckle through adversity until failure occurs, and mental skills training isn’t about fortifying that fixed failure point.

Mental toughness is a constellation of skills

Learn the 4 key areas of mental toughness development and the skills that provide the ability to control the mental processes that drive high performance when things become difficult. Regardless of age, sport, and level of competition, things will become difficult. 

Train the mind

Champion athletes don’t leave mental toughness to chance. It is easy to play well when things are going as expected, but how does your athlete handle it when they aren’t? Under pressure, an athlete doesn’t rise to their goal. They fall to the level of their mental skills training.
